The Tronto valley system shapes the area, with wooded slopes, cultivated hills and small ridges around the settlements. Monti Sibillini National Park lies within reach of this western hinterland and is the main protected landscape for the area. The nearest substantial town is Ascoli Piceno, which has a large historic centre, services and the well-known Piazza del Popolo. This part of southern Marche is known for hill villages, mixed farmland and access routes from the Apennine interior down toward Ascoli and the Adriatic side.
