The area sits in the vineyard hills between the Tanaro valley and the first Langhe ridges. The Tanaro river runs nearby below Alba. This is wine country of Moscato, Barbera and nearby Barbaresco, with continuous cultivated slopes, small hill villages and farmhouses. Alba is the nearest substantial town, with a historic centre, services and rail connections. Nizza Monferrato is also nearby and has a substantial small-town centre. Castagnole delle Lanze is on the border between Monferrato and the Langhe wine landscape, part of the wider vineyard area recognised by UNESCO as the Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. The area is known for vineyards, wine production and white truffles in the Alba zone.
