Gravina in Puglia itself is the nearest town of size, with a large historic centre and the Romanesque cathedral above the ravine. The town is known for its rock-hewn quarters and bridges across the gravina. Matera lies farther away and is relevant for day trips, but it is outside the immediate landscape considered here.
