Collio, immediately west and north-west of the town, is a known wine landscape of ridges, vineyards and small villages. Nova Gorica is directly across the border and together the two towns form a continuous urban area with rail links, services and regional cultural venues. Gorizia has a castle on the hill above the town and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for wine, especially Collio whites, and for its border history linked to the Isonzo front and the Italian-Slovenian frontier.
