Much of the massif falls within the Monte Amiata area of environmental protection and forest reserve. The nearest ski slopes are on Monte Amiata around Prato delle Macinaie and Cantore, reached in about 20–30 minutes by road. Abbadia San Salvatore is the other main mountain town nearby, and Arcidosso is the nearest larger centre on the Grosseto side; between them the massif has year-round services and a historic built core in several villages. The area is known for woodland on an extinct volcano, springs and chestnuts.
