The area sits in the hills of the Lemme valley at the edge of the Ligurian Apennines. The Lemme river runs through Gavi, and the Scrivia valley is close by. Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo lies nearby, covering the higher Apennine ridges and reservoirs south of the town. The nearest sizeable town is Novi Ligure, which provides rail links, shops and services; Alessandria and Genoa are both important for work and transport but are farther out. Gavi is known for the Forte di Gavi and for Gavi DOCG white wine vineyards spread across the surrounding hills.
