The area includes the coastal strip of Sterpaia and Baratti-Populonia, with Mediterranean pinewood, dunes and rocky shoreline, and the Parco archeologico di Baratti e Populonia on the headland. Populonia is an established historic hill village above the gulf, and the area is known for Etruscan and early iron-working remains linked to the old port. Piombino itself is the nearest town of size, with ferry links to Elba and a working port.
