The cluster is on the Gulf of Follonica coast, with the Tyrrhenian and views toward Elba across the Piombino channel. The headland and beaches of the Parco Costiero della Sterpaia lie just east of town, and the promontory of Populonia and Baratti is within the same coastal strip. Populonia is an Etruscan and Roman archaeological area, and the gulf around Baratti is one of the known historical landscapes of the Tuscan coast. Piombino itself is the main town nearby, with a port for Elba and a substantial historic centre on the sea. This stretch of coast is known for its beaches, Mediterranean scrub and Etruscan remains.
