The cluster is on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, with the Nebrodi mountains rising immediately inland. The Nebrodi Regional Park begins a short distance south, covering the mountain interior with forest, pasture and reservoirs. The coast here faces the Aeolian Islands, which are visible in clear weather but are offshore rather than part of the local landscape. The nearest sizeable inland centre is Sant’Agata di Militello itself, which functions as a service town with a port, rail station and hospitals and shops for the surrounding coast and Nebrodi villages. This stretch of coast is known for the contrast between a narrow seaside plain and the wooded Nebrodi slopes behind it, and for links inland to towns such as San Marco d’Alunzio and Mistretta on the mountain edge.
