The cluster sits in the Marghine uplands, with the Montiferru volcanic massif to the west and the higher Gennargentu mountains visible farther off on clear days but outside the immediate landscape. The Tirso river basin lies nearby, and Lake Omodeo is the main inland water body in this part of central-west Sardinia, though not right at the village. The nearest substantial centre is Macomer, which has rail links, supermarkets and the main services for this inland area. Bortigali itself is known in Sardinia for traditional cattle and sheep farming and for casizolu, the local stretched-curd cheese made in the area. The surrounding landscape is mainly open grazing land, low volcanic and basaltic hills, oak woodland patches and scattered rural settlements typical of the Marghine interior.
