The Lago di Penne nature reserve lies at Penne on the artificial lake of the same name on the Tavo river. Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park begins not far inland, with the main high-mountain scenery beyond the 15 km radius. Penne is itself the nearest substantial town, with a walled historic centre on a ridge and civic buildings, churches and local services. The area is known for olive groves, vineyards and hill farming, and for the brick-built historic fabric of Penne.
