The area is tied to Montecatini Terme, which has full town services, rail connections and the spa core for which it is known. Pistoia is the nearest provincial city, with a substantial historic centre and cathedral. Within this part of the hills the landscape is mostly wooded ridges, chestnut country and scattered hamlets rather than a single standout landmark. Abetone and the higher Apennine ski area are in the mountains farther north, but not within the immediate 15 km landscape.
