Much of the surrounding territory is inside or beside the Monteferrato and Appennino Pratese protected area system, with the Acquerino-Cantagallo nature reserve close by. The nearest ski area is Montepiano, with small local lifts in roughly 20–30 minutes when operating; larger Apennine skiing around Abetone is much farther and does not define the immediate landscape. Prato is the nearest city of size, with full services, rail links and a substantial historic centre; Vaiano and Vernio are the nearer valley towns for daily needs. This part of the Apennines is known for chestnut woods, hiking and old transhumance routes across the pass country between Tuscany and Emilia.
