Lago del Salto lies within this area, with long inlets between wooded slopes and small settlements on the shores. The Riserva Naturale Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia is nearby on the Lazio side of the lake. Borgorose is on the A24 corridor between L'Aquila and Carsoli, and L'Aquila is the nearest city of size with full services and a substantial historic centre.
