The cluster is in the built-up area of Sassari, so the lived setting is an urban fabric on a low limestone plateau rather than open countryside. The Gulf of Asinara and the beaches of Platamona are the nearest stretch of coast, about 10 km away. Porto Torres is the nearest port town, and Sassari itself is a provincial capital with a large historic centre, university, hospitals and full services. The Nurra plain lies to the west and north-west, with broad agricultural land and scattered Mediterranean scrub. The area is known for the Candelieri procession in Sassari, which is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
