The cluster is in the Gulf of Augusta on the Ionian coast. The coastline here is low and industrialized in stretches, with the port and petrochemical area forming much of the immediate setting. Augusta has a substantial historic center on its island site and the services of a medium-sized town. Siracusa is the nearest major historic city, with the archaeological park and Ortigia, but it lies beyond the immediate 15 km landscape. The wider area is known for its port, refinery district and naval presence.
