The area is inside the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park margin and close to the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, so the immediate setting is a mountain basin with protected Apennine slopes nearby. The nearest ski area is Campo Imperatore on Gran Sasso, roughly an hour by road depending on the access point and season. L'Aquila is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre, services, schools, hospitals and major monuments including the Basilica di Collemaggio and the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle.
