The Peloritani mountains rise immediately inland, with short steep valleys running down to the Tyrrhenian coast. The Tyrrhenian Sea is about 6 km away and the Gulf of Milazzo is the main coastal reference nearby. Messina is the nearest city of size, with port, rail connections, hospitals and full services. Milazzo is the nearest substantial town to the west, with a port and a large everyday-service base. This stretch of the Messina province is known for hillside villages above the coast and for olive groves and citrus in the lower ground.
