The upper Tiber valley surrounds Città di Castello, with cultivated valley floor and hills at the foot of the Apennines. The River Tiber runs through the area. Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and the wooded hills toward the Alpe della Luna are within this part of northern Umbria. The nearest larger centres in daily use are Città di Castello itself, which has a substantial historic centre and services, and Sansepolcro just across the Tuscan border. This area is known for tobacco growing, textiles, and the long Renaissance association of Città di Castello with Alberto Burri and earlier with Raphael’s circle.
