The Tiber is the main river of this part of the province to the west. Monte Gennaro and the Lucretili range rise within this radius to the east, and the Monte Catillo and Monti Lucretili protected areas begin nearby in the same direction. Tivoli is the nearest historic town of note in the wider area, with Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, both UNESCO sites, but it is outside the immediate landscape. The area is known historically for the 1867 Battle of Mentana and for olive country on the approach to the Sabina.
