Much of the upper valley lies in Gran Paradiso National Park, one of Italy’s oldest national parks, with access up-valley toward Ceresole Reale and the park boundary within daily local range. The nearest ski area is the small lift area at Alpe Cialma near Locana, while the larger lifts at Ceresole Reale are farther up the valley by road. Cuorgnè is the nearest larger town in the lower valley, with everyday shops and services; Ivrea is the nearest substantial town with broader services and rail connections. The area is known for alpine hiking, mountaineering, hydroelectric reservoirs farther up the Orco valley, and as one of the Piedmont approaches toward Gran Paradiso.
