The Chisone runs through Pinerolo and the Pellice is nearby. The Po plain begins immediately east of town. The nearest ski lifts are in the upper Val Chisone around Pragelato and Sestriere, roughly an hour or more by road, so they are outside the immediate landscape. Pinerolo is the main town locally and has a substantial historic centre, arcaded streets, services, schools and a cathedral. Turin is the nearest large city for higher-order services and transport, but it lies beyond the immediate 15 km setting. The area is known for its position between the plain and the Alpine valleys, for cavalry and military history, and for foothill agriculture and livestock in the surrounding countryside.
