The Cottian Alps surround Salbertrand, and the upper Susa Valley runs through the area with the Dora Riparia. Salbertrand lies inside the Parco naturale del Gran Bosco di Salbertrand, a protected larch and fir mountainside on the south side of the valley. The Via Lattea ski area is nearby, with lifts at Oulx, Sauze d’Oulx and Cesana Torinese reached in roughly 10–25 minutes by road depending on the base station. Oulx is the nearest town of size and provides rail access, shops and everyday services. The area is known for alpine woodland, old military and smuggling routes across the frontier zone, and winter sports in the upper Val di Susa.
