The lower Val di Susa has a continuous mountain backdrop, forested slopes and small villages set between the river corridor and the side valleys. The Sacra di San Michele stands on Mount Pirchiriano about 15 km away and is one of the main historic landmarks of the valley. Susa is the nearest larger town, with Roman remains, services and rail connections through the valley. The area is known for the old transalpine route toward the Mont Cenis and Fréjus passes and for fortified villages and abbeys along the valley. The nearest ski areas are in the upper Val di Susa, with lifts around Bardonecchia and the Via Lattea resorts reached by road in roughly 45 to 70 minutes.
