The Stagnone lagoon and the salt pans around Marsala are within roughly 15 km to the north, with shallow water, windmills and the island of Mozia. Marsala is the nearest larger town and has a substantial historic centre, everyday services and rail links. Mazara del Vallo is also nearby and has a working fishing port and an old centre. This stretch of western Sicily is known for vineyards, olive groves, market gardening and salt production.
