The area is on the Strait of Sicily coast at the mouth of the Mazaro river. The shoreline around Mazara del Vallo is low and urban near town, with sandy stretches and small rocky sections along the coast. The nearest town of size is Marsala to the north, with a historic centre, port and services, while Castelvetrano lies inland toward the Belice plain. The town itself has a substantial historic centre with Arab-Norman street patterns and a fishing port, and it is known for fishing and for the bronze satyr found offshore. The Stagnone lagoon and the salt pans around Marsala are within the wider coastal system to the north, but outside the immediate landscape that would raise the score.
