The Taro river runs through the area, with wooded ridges and mountain passes around the valley. Part of the territory falls in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. The nearest ski area is Schia on Monte Caio, roughly an hour to an hour and a half by road depending on the exact hamlet. Borgo Val di Taro itself is the main service centre of this stretch of the valley, with shops, schools, rail links and hospital services for the surrounding mountain communes. The area is known for porcini mushrooms from Borgotaro, which have IGP status.
