The Parco Regionale dello Stirone e del Piacenziano lies at the edge of the town and follows the Stirone badlands and fossil-bearing gullies between Fidenza, Salsomaggiore and the surrounding countryside. The first Apennine hills begin just south toward Salsomaggiore Terme, but the main lived landscape within 15 km is still plain and low hills rather than mountain terrain. Fidenza is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre around its Romanesque cathedral on the Via Francigena, rail connections, and the usual services of a district town. Salsomaggiore Terme is close by and is known for its spa buildings and thermal waters. The area is known for mixed farming and for its position on the Via Francigena.
