The Taro river runs through the area, and the slopes around Borgo Val di Taro are wooded with a mix of valley floor, ridges and passes rather than open plain. The Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano lies nearby to the east but is outside the immediate 15 km landscape for most of the Borgo Val di Taro area. The nearest town of size is Pontremoli to the south or Borgotaro itself as the local service centre, with shops, schools and rail connections on the Parma–La Spezia line. The area is known for porcini mushrooms, including the local IGP funghi di Borgotaro.
