The cluster is at the meeting point of the Valle Peligna and the upper Pescara valley, with the Maiella massif to the east and the Gran Sasso and Sirente-Velino groups within the surrounding mountain frame. The Pescara River rises here at the Sorgenti del Pescara, and the area lies next to the Popoli springs and gorges. The Monte Genzana Alto Gizio Regional Nature Reserve begins just south of town, and the Maiella National Park is close on the eastern side of the valley. The nearest ski lifts are at Passo Lanciano on the Maiella, roughly an hour by road, and at Campo di Giove or Roccaraso farther away. Sulmona is the nearest larger town, with a complete historic centre, rail connections and services. Popoli is known for its springs and for sitting at a mountain crossroads between the inland Abruzzo valleys.
