The Orta River runs through the valley here, with gorges and wooded slopes inside the surrounding hills. The area is inside Maiella National Park. The nearest ski lifts are on the Passolanciano-Maielletta side of the massif, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by road depending on the access point. Sulmona is the nearest substantial town inland, while Pescara on the Adriatic is the main city for wider services and rail connections. Caramanico Terme is one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia.
