This is mountain countryside with beech woods, pasture and scattered hamlets, close to the regional border with Liguria. The nearest ski area is Prato della Cipolla on Monte Bue, roughly half an hour by road from Ferriere. Bobbio is the nearest small historic town of note in the valley, with services and a well-preserved old centre.
