The cluster lies in the lower Arno plain on the Arno river, in a belt of flat land between Pisa and Florence with fields, embankments, canals and dispersed industry. Within this radius the main landscape feature is the Arno and the wetland edge of the Padule di Fucecchio area to the east, a large inland marsh shared with the neighboring provinces. San Miniato is the nearest larger historic town, set on a hill above the plain, with a substantial old center and a well-known white truffle tradition. The area around Santa Croce sull'Arno is known for its leather and tanning district.
