The cluster sits in the Pollino massif, with Monte Pollino, Serra del Prete and the high Basilicata-Calabria Apennines within the local landscape. It is inside Pollino National Park, and Rotonda is one of the main access points to the park on the Basilicata side. The Mercure-Lao mountain area is nearby, with deep wooded valleys and limestone relief around the town. The nearest ski area is on Monte Sirino, roughly an hour's drive away, which is outside the immediate landscape. The nearest larger centres for services are Lauria and Castrovillari; for a wider range of shops and hospitals people also use the Tyrrhenian coast around Praia a Mare and Maratea. The area is known for mountain forests, hiking routes and the white aubergine of Rotonda, which has PGI status.
