The southwestern side of the Pollino National Park is close to Lauria, and the park is one of the main protected landscapes of southern Italy. The nearest ski area is Monte Sirino, with lifts above Lago Laudemio, roughly a 25 to 35 minute drive depending on the exact starting point. Lauria itself is a small service town with a historic upper quarter and day-to-day shops and services; the larger centre in the wider area is Lagonegro. This part of Basilicata is known for mountain scenery, forested slopes and its position between the Pollino and the Tyrrhenian side of southern Basilicata.
