The Lao and Mercure river system is the main watercourse of this border area between Basilicata and Calabria. Pollino National Park lies immediately around the valley and includes the Serra del Prete, Monte Pollino and other high ridges south and west of the town. The nearest ski area is Monte Sirino, roughly an hour by road in winter conditions. The nearest town of size is Scalea on the Tyrrhenian coast, while to the north-west the daily-service centre for the valley is Lauria; larger hospitals and rail links are farther away on the coast and at Lagonegro. The wider Pollino area is known for beech forests, canyons and the loricate pine that survives on the high slopes.
