The Tyrrhenian coast is the defining landscape here, with the Golfo di Policastro and steep slopes of the southern Apennines dropping close to the sea. The coast around Maratea has rocky headlands, small coves and a long cliffed shoreline rather than a broad plain. The area falls within the Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park on the inland side of Maratea. Maratea is the nearest town of size and has a historic hilltop old centre as well as the port area on the coast. The area is known for its cliff coast and coves, and for the Cristo Redentore statue above the town.
