The coast here is a low sandy shore backed by pine woods and Mediterranean scrub rather than cliffs. The Stagno di Platamona wetland lies in the same coastal strip. Inland, the land rises into cultivated hills with vineyards and olive groves in the Romangia area. Porto Torres is the nearest larger town, with port services and Roman archaeological remains, and Sassari is close by with the full range of city services and a large historic centre. The Asinara National Park is offshore on Asinara island, reached via Porto Torres or Stintino, but it is outside the immediate 15 km landscape. The area is known for wine production, especially Vermentino and Cannonau, and for summer beach tourism along the Gulf of Asinara.
