The Parco naturale regionale di Porto Conte lies immediately outside Alghero, and the Capo Caccia–Isola Piana marine protected area covers the adjoining sea. Capo Caccia is known for its sea cliffs and the Grotta di Nettuno. Alghero itself is a substantial coastal town with a walled historic centre, a harbour, beaches, and regular services. The old town is known for its Catalan heritage.
