The cluster is at the north end of Lago di Mezzola, with the Adda and Mera valley system opening around it and steep Alpine slopes rising close to the settlement. It lies immediately beside the Valchiavenna, the main corridor from Colico toward Chiavenna, so the local landscape is a narrow mountain valley with water, rock faces and chestnut and mixed woodland on the lower sides. The Riserva Naturale Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola is within the same local area, covering the flat wetland zone at the lake’s southern and eastern margins. Chiavenna, the nearest substantial town, has a full service centre and a preserved historic core. Madesimo and the Valchiavenna ski lifts are the nearest major skiing, roughly three quarters of an hour to an hour by road depending on the lift base. The area is known for the lake-and-valley setting at the entrance to Valchiavenna and for access toward the Spluga route.
