The Mera river runs through this part of the valley, and Lake Mezzola begins a few kilometres to the south. The area lies at the edge of the Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola nature reserve. Chiavenna is the nearest town of size, with a substantial historic centre and services. The Splügen and Maloja routes branch from the upper valley beyond Chiavenna, which is what this area is known for: an Alpine transit valley between Lake Como, the Grisons and the central Alps.
