The Lepontine Alps rise around the valley, with steep wooded slopes and narrow side valleys close to the settled floor. The Mera river runs through this area into Lake Mezzola. The Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola nature reserve lies immediately to the south, with wetland, reed beds and the open water of Lake Mezzola inside the local landscape. Chiavenna is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre and services. Madesimo and the Valchiavenna ski area are the nearest major lifts, roughly 35 to 45 minutes by road depending on the base station. The area is known for the Valchiavenna corridor toward the Spluga and Maloja passes and for the Bresaola and mountain-food culture of the province.
