Tirano is the nearest town of size and has a substantial historic centre, rail links including the Bernina line into Switzerland, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano. The Bernina Pass road and the Swiss border are close by, which makes this a transit valley with strong alpine scenery. Aprica is the nearest ski area, about 20 minutes by road, with larger skiing on the Bernina side in Switzerland farther away. The area is known for terraced viticulture on the south-facing Valtellina slopes and for being a gateway between Lombardy and the Engadine.
