The area includes the upper Val Canale and the Tarvisio forest, with steep wooded slopes and alpine peaks around the basin. The Fusine Lakes are within about 10 km, and the Slizza/Gailitz river runs through the valley. Much of the surrounding mountain area is within the Julian Prealps Regional Natural Park on the Italian side and adjoins protected alpine landscapes across the borders. Ski lifts at Tarvisio-Monte Lussari leave from the area, and Sella Nevea is also within a short drive. Tarvisio is the local service town, with rail links, border-road connections and year-round tourism facilities. Monte Lussari is a known pilgrimage and ski destination, and the area is known for alpine walking, winter sports and its position at the meeting point of Italy, Austria and Slovenia.
