The cluster sits at the south edge of the Julian Prealps, with the Tagliamento valley and the first mountain ridges immediately around Gemona. The Tagliamento river runs nearby. The area is next to the Parco naturale regionale delle Prealpi Giulie. The nearest ski lifts are on the Sella Nevea and Tarvisio side of the Julian Alps, roughly an hour or more by road depending on the base station. Gemona has a substantial historic centre rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake, a cathedral, everyday services and rail connections, and Udine is the nearest larger city for full urban services. Venzone is nearby and is listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. This part of Friuli is known for its position between the plain and the mountains and for access into the Julian and Carnic alpine valleys.
