Palmanova, the star-fort town, is the nearest town of size and has the UNESCO-listed Venetian fortress plan. Cervignano del Friuli is another nearby service town with shops and rail connections. This area is known for its flat agricultural landscape, the historic Habsburg and Venetian frontier around the Isonzo, and for wine zones farther north toward the Collio and the Carso rather than here on the plain.
