The Natisone valley is the main local landscape feature, with steep slopes, small hamlets and mixed forest around the ridge villages. The wider setting is the eastern Friulian Prealps; higher Julian Alpine scenery begins farther north but is not inside the immediate 15 km landscape. Cividale del Friuli is the nearest substantial town, with a preserved historic centre and the Lombard UNESCO site. The area is known for the Slovene-speaking villages of the Natisone valleys and for hill farming, woods and chestnut country.
