The Isonzo is the main named river in this part of the province, flowing a few kilometres to the east, and the Laguna di Grado begins within this radius to the south-west with canals, fishing areas and reclaimed farmland around the inland edge. Palmanova, the star-fort town, is the nearest town of size and has the UNESCO-listed Venetian fortress plan. Cervignano del Friuli is another nearby service town with shops and rail connections. This area is known for its flat agricultural landscape, the historic Habsburg and Venetian frontier around the Isonzo, and for wine zones farther north toward the Collio and the Carso rather than here on the plain.
