The area sits in the Monferrato hills, with low vine-covered ridges and cultivated slopes around the Po plain. The Po runs by Casale Monferrato, and the river landscape is part of daily life on the edge of town. To the north and west, within this part of Monferrato, there are vineyard hills, small hill villages and wine country tied to the Monferrato name. Casale Monferrato is the main town nearby and has a substantial historic centre, services, and major churches and civic buildings. Monferrato degli Infernot, a UNESCO World Heritage wine landscape, lies in this wider hill area and is associated with the stone cellars cut into the pietra da cantoni. The area is known for wine production, especially Barbera and Grignolino, and for rice country beginning out into the flatter lands toward Vercelli.
