The cluster is in the western Abruzzo Apennines, in the upper Turano plain and hills between the Monti Carseolani and the Simbruini-Ernici mountain system. Carsoli has a medieval core and the area is known historically as the Carseolano, on the old route between Rome and inland Abruzzo. To the west and south, the Simbruini mountains form the main nearby relief; the Monte Livata ski area above Subiaco is the nearest established lift area, roughly an hour’s drive, but it lies outside the immediate landscape. Tagliacozzo is the nearest small historic town of note, with a built-up old center and piazzas, and Avezzano is the nearest larger service town with rail links, shops and hospitals. This is inland Apennine country of valleys, wooded slopes and cultivated basin floor rather than a single protected or nationally famous landscape.
